Nailing NAPLAN Tests

In one month’s time (11 May to 13 May 2010) , all Australian students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests. Students will be tested on their knowledge, skills and understanding across the Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy areas. NAPLAN is designed to provide feedback to parents and schools on how students are progressing and to frame teaching and learning planning for future years.

Like any form of testing, NAPLAN has the potential to create anxiety and concern in the minds of students. Try these following tips to ensure your child is ‘test ready’:

* Save the Date. Know and display the testing timetable. Ensure your child is aware of which components they will be facing each day and for how long.

* Check out the practice materials. The NAPLAN website provides a wealth of practice activities as well as previous year’s tests. Look through and discuss these examples. It is important students are familiar with the format of the papers and have an understanding of the varying complexity of the tasks.

* Gather the Supplies. Over the next few weeks, your child’s school will be distributing information regarding stationery supplies required for the testing. In addition to the well-stocked pencil case, your child should also have enough healthy snacks and room temperature water to keep their brain energised and refreshed.

For further information including a timetable of the three testing days, previous test papers and the Writing Task marking criteria go to www.naplan.edu.au.
